Poop eating can become an imprinted habit so preventing it in a puppy as much as possible is pretty important.
It can be a learned behavior, but regardless of who learns it, the instigator is of one of 2 points of origin:
1) if they eat their own poop- the food they are consuming is either
a) not bio-available enough
b) the dog is deficient in enzymes
2) if the poop the instigator is eating is another dog’s feces,
then the above applies to the dog that produces the poop being eaten.
This said dog’s poop is still high in sugars and sometimes digestive enzymes as well,
so it can even act as a food source to the dog which consumes it.
To Stop Dogs from Eating Dog Poop 1. Pick up their poop right away. 2. Improve your dog’s diet. 3. Make the poop unappealing.
A meeting with Kris or Libby where we could review your dogs' diet, history, and who’s feces is being eaten by whom is sure to help find a path to a solution.
