Pet Food Labeling Rules

Are you a trivia nut? You'll get a kick out of this stuff.

Some good...some not so good rules of labeling pet foods.

Pet Food Labeling Rules:

100% rule
Must be 100% of what it claims to be.
(For example, “100% real fish canned cat food”: there may be nothing else in there.)

95% rule
Must contain minimum of 95%
(For example, “95% tripe”: there must be 95% tripe and 5% of whatever it needs for processing like water or guar gum etc.)

25% Rule
Must be called a “Recipe” or “Formula”
(for example Lamb & Rice Formula must contain at least 25% of Lamb and/OR rice)
(for example Bison Recipe must contain at least 25% bison)
........This is where it gets good
3% Rule
Label must use the word “with”.
For example, “Savory Dog Kibble with real chicken”
(This means there must be at least/ but not more than 3% chicken)

Flavor Rule
List of ingredients must include something, somewhere that offers that flavor.
( yet it doesn't have to be the thing its flavored like itself)
For example, “Savory Dog Kibble with real beef flavor!” Doesn’t matter how much or what it is from so long as it provides the flavoring. Yep, that beef "flavored" kibble need not contain any beef.
