K9 CPR, don't miss a beat!

K9 CPR Class

The basics

Why would a dog need CPR?
  • Choking
  • A long, hard fall,
  • Thrown from a car
  • Drowning
  • Poison
  • Strangulation

1) FIRST & ALWAYS muzzle the dog! Even if it's:
  • unconscious
  • your own dog
  • a friendly dog
  • muzzling does NOT interfere with CPR
2) Check for breath & pulse

If dog is not breathing, check for pulse in back groin, check for heartbeat with your hands.

3) If Not Breathing, no heartbeat:
If possible turn the dog on to it's Right side for compressions in order to get the best access to it's heart.
Locate the heart just behind elbow placement.

Begin compressions at a ratio of 30 pumps to 2 breaths
Breaths will be 5 seconds apart
The 30 pumps will be set to the rhythm of the BeeGee's Staying Alive
(Yep, I know this sounds silly, but you get the correct tempo this way)

4) Giving a dog breaths:
Close the dog's mouth and lips firmly by wrapping your hands around the entire muzzle so your breath does not escape
while you blow in through THE NOSTRILS.
During the 5 seconds turn you head and look at chest cavity and listen for breath.

5) The Compressions:
Compressions should be firm enough to push the rib cage 1/3-1/2 the way down.
One should REMEMBER to completely let up on the rib cage between pushes to allow the HEART to refill.

Do this until the dog comes to or you get to ER help.
If you're alone and must move the dog to help,
do CPR for 2 minutes and move the dog for 1 minute,
do CPR for 2 minutes and move the dog for 1 minute,
and repeat until you get the animal into a Veterinarians care.
YES this animal can still be saved.
More times than not the heart is in perfect condition
and can be restarted with drugs, so DON"T GIVE UP!
