Doc's Delights: Locally Sourced Raw Treats for Dogs
Q: what drove you to create this? A: Well, I'm a distributor of locally raised foods for humans. I work with many local meat producers-this means from ranches to the packing plant. I saw how parts of the animals being so carefully raised by ranchers were going to waste. In the end, I pay for the processing of the entire animal-not just the human consumption parts. I thought-what a waste....this could be so good for pets!
Q: what inspired the name? A: Ahhh-my dog "Doc." He's named after my father. He's a doctor.
Q: what standards do you put upon yourself in regards to your product (s)? A: Freshness and locally sourced. If it's not from right around Bozeman, I have to know what ranch in Montana it's from.
This gives me the chance to make sure its raised humanly & sustain-ably.
Q: what was the biggest challenge thus far? A: Packaging. Finding a good package that not only promotes but preserves is a challenge.
Q: if there was a product fairy, what would you wish for your biz or product line? A: Free presents for everyone!!! No, seriously, if there was a product fairy I'd wish for more storage and more facilities to help me get product ready. And maybe a cost effective freeze drier, that'd be nice.
Q: what about the process brings you the most joy? A: Giving out samples and seeing pups enjoy it!
Q: what’s unique unto your product that you want consumers to know about? A: I want them to know about the relationships I have with each producer: each farmer, each rancher. I know them by name, I know their practices. I want customers to know just how much work and care goes into growing livestock and the story that is behind every producer weather its a ranch, farm, or a Hutterite colony; and that I have a personal relationship with these folks throughout the entire chain.
Q: If you could over-hear a customer comment on your product, what would you most want them to say? A: That their dog truly enjoys my treats more than any other! And that they've seen some sort of improvement in that animals' health-whether it be physical -like dental, or emotional- like more calm. I'd really like that.
